A Rather Lengthy Bookish Post | feat. two tags

Hello all and happy Saturday!

I got tagged by The Arbitrary Fairy some time ago for this fun set of bookish questions (created by Madison), and not even a couple days ago was tagged by Kenechi. Which are both great excuses to be bookish. And talk about books.

What’s not to like?

#1. What books or series that intimidate you (because of length, density, subject) would feel like an accomplishment to finish?

A Brandon Sanderson fantasy series. I’ve heard so much about them but the length of them is quite overwhelming. If not also the enthusiasm and dedication of his fans. I did read Starsight a couple months ago, but from what I’ve heard his other series are a lot more intense and have a much higher learning curve for the worldbuilding.

I could think of a couple classics too, like The Brothers Karamazov. Also remember starting the biography Bonhoeffer early last year, which I want to finish at some point, but the first couple chapters were fairly intimidating.

Oh, and my 900+ page history book this school year was extremely intimidating but I’m over half way through – and that’s a huge accomplishment in my opinion haha.

#2. What author would you like to coauthor a book with?

Ohhh.

This one is hard. There are so many aspects to consider, but I guess one of my friends and I have been talking about writing and illustrating a collection of original poetry together.

Another friend and I have talked about creating a book that is filled with beautiful things such as charts of constellations, diagrams of mushrooms, berries, plants and vibrant watercolor paintings of seashells, but also sprawling pages of illustrations of people and pages of poems, quotes, funky clocks, weird hot air balloons, and random facts about animals, both the strange and the awe-inspiring. But it wouldn’t look like a ‘fact book,’ it would be very pretty and colorful. Feathers, patterns on insect wings, flowers, etc.

As for a previously published author, I’m much too intimidated to say any one author haha. I feel like I could learn a lot of specific things from different authors, but coauthoring is a scary thought.

#3. If you could interview any author on your blog, who would it be? What’s one question you would ask?

Charles Dickens; I would ask if he could fully name and identify all his characters from Bleak House off the top of his head.

#4. What genre is out of your comfort zone that you’d like to conquer someday and write within?

Urban fantasy is fascinating but I’ve never worked up the courage to try that one yet. A solid modern day coming of age novel is something I wish I had enough talent for. And my non fiction writing skills is something I wish I could improve.

Let’s just ignore the fact I keep answering these one answer questions with three or more answers. 😆

#5. What specific edition of a book would you like to own someday? (It could be rare, a first edition, an anniversary edition, signed, or one with a cover special to you, etc.)

As of right now all I want is a Barnes and Noble classic copy of Little Dorrit to match my other classics. I like their elegant yet colorful covers, inner layout, helpful notes in the back, and the binding of the book makes it easy to open.

So is this so much to ask for??

I have looked everywhere but it does. not. exist.

Which is a problem I’ve run into before. It is very hard to find a passable printing of lesser know classics. Most of the time all I can find are random companies I’ve never heard of that have on Amazon with the most hideous covers, title art looking like it was made for a early 2000s power point slide, and the inside looks like it was copy and pasted from notepad and printed for the a cost of three pennies.

In the end, I’ve decided to get a Penguin Classics copy, which I am happy about… I do like their line of classics. Literally the only downside is my classic collection not matching. Which is mildly annoying.

Beyond that I much prefer the covers of the original printing of The Hundred Cupboards series by N.D. Wilson and would love to find a proper copy of Dandelion Fire.

Apparently I’m really opinionated about covers??

#6. Are there any books or bookish items that you’d like to collect?

Barnes and Noble classics! I’m going to start a petition for them to branch out!

Kidding haha.

I am having trouble thinking up a proper answer to this question. Beyond books, I don’t really collect book-related novelty items.

Bookshelves, then?

#7. Name one bookish place you’d like to visit. (Not somewhere you’d like to visit because of a book and not a fictional place within a book. A library, bookstore, etc.)

My grandmother got me a huge coffee table book of the most beautiful libraries around the world for Christmas so this is actually something I have been thinking about.

Out of the libraries detailed and photographed for that book I would like to visit The Benedictine Abbey Library of Admont in Austria (fold out pictured on the right) and The National Palace Library in Marfa (in Portugal with bats).

I have actually in the past to visited a lot of fantastic book-related places which were all amazing though.

I’ve been to the Boston Library, the Library of Congress, the libraries at Yale university. All of the above which had ancient books, fascinating history, and breathtaking art.

I have hunted down some pictures of two of the Yale libraries when I visited there a couple years ago during a debate tournament weekend

The books are so old that there are no windows in order that no sunlight would harm them. I forgot I did this, but I hunted down the “d” section for Charles Dickens and took a extremely blurry picture of his books.

You can still see how huge they are though. Especially that green copy of Bleak House, if I may be so bold as to point out.

#8. What’s one bookish event you’d like to attend? (A festival, a signing, a book fair, etc.)

Yes? I’ve nevver been to any of the above, but I suppose the idea of “a book festival” sounds splendid, so I would interested in going to one to see what it is like.

#9. Your WIP is getting published and designing the cover is solely up to you. What does it look like?

The first question is “which work in progress?” 😆

As much as I have opinions about covers, I have absolutely no idea what my time bus story cover might look like. I’ve tried to make mock covers but none of them are right. Which is frustrating on multiple levels haha. I feel like once you have a really good picture for the cover it can help as inspiration when getting stuck in tiny details or distracted with losing sight of the core elements you value of the story, such as style, subject, portrayal, etc.

That might just be me though?

As for Goosey Laura Lukoner Lose Guiseppe Laurentius Lewkenor Lewis III I have always pictured a simple neutral or warm palate with either a (geometric?) silhouette of a man in a top hat in front of a large (brick?) factory with smoke coming out. Or some Charles Dickens-esque pen sketch of Guiseppe. I guess the main idea is a clean and well done minimalist cover with a nod to old fashion elements?

That, or something ornate with gears and a Victorian or (after research I have discovered this very helpful name) fictorian font.

At least, I would like to try the two categories and see which I like the feel of best, though the later is growing on me fast.

And my newest WIP, my new novel I have only just this week thought up and began plotting, I have very specific ideas for but tHaT wOuLd giVe tHinGs away. And I want to give it some more time before announcing its title (which I lowkey adore) and its plot and characters (of which/whom I am currently obsessed with.)

#10. What’s one thing you’d like to accomplish within the bookish world? (As a writer, reader, blogger, whatever you want.)

I would like to write a novel that stays with people long after they put it down. One that is as addictive and approachable as candy fiction but as thought-provoking and unforgettable as a soul-searching classic. And I would like my work to always accurately portray the complexity of human nature. Something I once heard someone call a book which I thought was encompassing of a lovely kind of book… a book that “welcomes” the reader and gives them a home. I’d also like to be able to write a book like that for children.

Now for the questions from The One and Only Kenechi, which are technically part of yet another Liebeter Award (I can never spell that thing right ahaha) (and whatever the award part means?).

#1. What is your favorite non-fiction book?

All the President’s Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Wooward.

It’s the true political detective story about two fresh reporters who happened to be assigned to cover a small piece of news about a seemingly insignificant break in at the Watergate complex in 1972 that lead to their further investigations that uncovered the full Watergate sandal. It is both gripping and informative, and gives a very intriguing picture of journalism and a compelling illustration about the power of words and story.

And fun fact! One of my character from the time bus story is heavily based off of these two reporters, and there is even a scene that draws inspiration from a series of scenes in this book.

#2. What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?

The ocean and the sky.

#3. What are your movie tastes?

Good movies.

Movies that are good art.

And they are sometimes (but not limited to) historical movies, action films, musicals, bbc period dramas, movies based off of real life court cases, dramas, and pixar.

So yes, the genre is Good Art™

#4. If you could speak any language you wanted in the blink of an eye, which one?

German. I’ve heard if you know German and English, you can go about anywhere in Europe. Next choice would be Italian, Spanish, or Croatian.

Or something like that. The more I think about it, the more I keep thinking of more languages I would like to be fluent in. 😆

#5. How do you like to organize your bookshelf? (Alphabetically, color coded, biggest to smallest, etc.)

I actually have a very specific method. I was originally a die hard color-coded-bookshelf advocate (though really that hasn’t changed the benefits are unparalleled) but I’ve made a few modifications to accommodate series and poetry. My top shelf is series (which are all black/grey or yellow themed anyways??) and then my next two shelves are color. My third is classics. And the fourth is poetry and non fiction.

#6. What do you do to wind down?

Light a candle in my room, crack open my window, listen music, and lay on the floor staring at the ceiling.

Variations include poetry, hot tea, and drawing.

#7. What is your dream pet?

Ever since that amazing dream I had a few weeks ago, a smol puppy named Boba.

#8. What is THE one book you want turned into a movie? Furthermore, what actors would star in it?

Oh boy.

I’ll go with Island of the World by Michael O’Brien, one of my favorite books of all time, and I have no idea who might star in it.

It is the life story of a Croatian man from very early childhood to death, covering the very complicated and dark history of the country including its occupation by Fascist Italian forces and Nazi German ones in World War II, to the experience of being an immigrant in America. It also deals with themes such as love, reconciliation with past, the complexity of human nature, and perseverance through hardship. It is one of the most moving stories I’ve read. I’d be interested to see a quality film based off of it.

Content warning for this book as well. Most memorable was the graphic descriptions of violence experienced by Josip (the main character).

Isn’t the cover gorgeous too though??

#9. How much coffee (or tea) in a day is too much?

For me? Two cups of coffee, or four cups of tea.

#10. Did you know that algae is used in food products? How does that make you feel?

I have a vague memory of reading that in my Physical Science or Biology text book (or somewhere else?), but since you brought it up I am slightly concerned but not too much because I’m not dead yet with whatever I’m eating (and maybe I’m not eating algae)

Who knows though 😆

I’m a bit afraid to research further.

#11. If you had a chance to cosplay, who would you go as? There are no limits.

I am overwhelmed. I need my limits.

Sherlock.

Jean Louise Finch.

I am both running out of ideas and having too many ideas at one time so I’m going to stop for all of our sakes.

      Aha! That would be the complete Earthsea collection. If you haven’t read it, you need to! Absolutely amazing worldbuilding, fascinating characters. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s kind of the big high fantasy between Tolkien and Sanderson.
      And yes! I have read the first two books, and I feel kind of bad talking about it, because I know there are a lot of people that really like the Tales of Goldstone Wood ahaha, and I did not particularly like them. *facepalm* (Did you take Maya’s fantasy read quiz? It was literally the last suggestion for me lol.) That’s due to a couple different things, idk if you want me to explain myself on that or not. *shrugs* I don’t mind if you are interested in debating over it XD

      Ah! Those are marvelous choices. And yes. The amazing and brilliant BBC TV series, of course. 😉

        I actually didn’t really like the first several books very much. I think I warmed up during reading Moonblood, and loved Dragonwitch and the later books. The first one was quite rough to get through for me. The author improved a LOT as the series went on 🙂

        3. Oh, I must say though… my copy of Earthsea is difficult to read because it’s so thick and heavy (especially in bed! it’s huge lol). If you want a more readable version, you should go with individual copies of the books. 🙂

      Right?? Sometimes I wish I knew a thousand other languages just so I could read books in them.
      Have you ever read the book, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch? It’s a fantastic historical novel about Nathanial Bowditch from early American History. During his life, he would learn languages in order to read certain books. Your comment reminded me of it.
      Also the book is simply amazing so shoutout, maybe you should read it if you haven’t. 😉

        1. Haha, well I read it because of school (it’s written into a fairly popular homeschool co-op program? maybe that’s why so many people you know have read it? idk…) but I enjoyed it! It’s a fun one. 🙂

    Those libraries are absolutely stunning and have been added to my list of “want-to-visit” places.
    The sky is definitely one of the most gorgeous things in all of creation; when I need to remind myself Who is bigger than all the darkness in the world, I just look up.
    Eesh. I did the history book that you’re doing last year (although I did only end up finishing about half of it…), and it was intimidating for sure when my mom lifted it out of the package. XD
    The original 100 Cupboards covers are beautiful! I received the first two books with the “new” covers for my own collection this Christmas, and even though I still like them, they can’t compare to the originals. 🙂

      Well half way is still a MAJOR accomplishment. You should feel very accomplished haha. Congratulations! All my siblings read this book, so I didn’t have that moment of pulling out of the box. I’ve known for years that it was my fate. XD
      For the most part I’ve really enjoyed it though! Even if at some points the author seems to be venting lol.

    Ok, I NEED this fancy/pretty/fact book you and your friend want to put together. It sounds absolutely amazing and I am a sucker for books full of beautiful pictures and things.

    OH MY GOSH ISLAND OF THE WORLD. I know so few people who read Michael O’Brien and his books just *emotions* *many emotions* Island of The World is just…honestly one of the most amazing books I’ve ever read. (and such a unique part of history that your NEVER heart about) I just….I could gush about that book for hours (so yes please do a post about your favorite books) (and I would love to hear about Bleak House, because last time I tried to get through it, I couldn’t. Which is weird because I lobe Dickens. Maybe I’ll have to try again?)

      i have never in my life met or talked to someone who knew who Michael O’Brien is. When I saw your comment I was utterly shocked. Seriously an honor to know that you have read Island of the World too. And yEs about it being a unique part of history no one really hears/talks about. And the ending about broke me. I don’t think I’ve ever been moved by a book so much.
      I haven’t read any of his other books, but am trying to decide which to read next. Have you read his other books?? Are they good too?

      And the fact you agree about Barnes and Nobles classics???

      1. I know hardly ANYONE who has read Michael O’Brien either!!!!

        I have read I think all his books?? Father Elijah is one of my favorites, and then there’s a trilogy which I also REALLY love (especially the first book) it’s Strangers and Sojourners, Plague Journal, and Eclipse of the Sun. The Voyage to Alpha Centauri is another good one, it’s really fun and wacky too (and serious) (it’s science fiction, which is the only books he’s written in that genre) (and it’s huuuuuuge)

    Ok, but now I’m so intrigued and want to know everything about your newest WIP?? When will you tell us about it???
    “Good movies. Movies that are good art.” This is the best answer to this question XD Every time I try to say what kind of movies (or books, for that matter) I like, I realize it honestly has little to do with genre and a lot to do with whether or not it’s a well-made movie.
    Will you please dress up as Lady Cathrine Deburgh and go up to strangers in the middle of conversations and demand to know what they’re talking about and say “I must have my part in the conversation!”? I feel like…it would give me new life.
    What book would I like to see adapted into a movie? Hmmmm. I feel like Gary D. Schmidt books could make good movies…but they also might ruin them???

    Ahh, Brandon Sanderson. His books are quite daunting, aren’t they? I started The Way of Kings, which is so gigantic that I couldn’t finish before it had to go back to the library. I still haven’t gotten it back, but one of these days I will, cuz from what I read it was very good! I’m going to be reading Starsight soon. I just finished Skyward recently.
    Omword, I would sooo buy a book filled with beautiful things like that! That sort of book always attracts me. ❤
    Ah yes! I adore Barnes & Noble books. I haven't been there in FOREVER, which is making me really sad. That's one of the only stores I *really* enjoy going to. Because books, obviously. XD A visit to a bookstore is greatly overdue.
    The most beautiful libraries in the world!! Now that would be a great book to have. If I visited any of them I would probably just die of pure ecstasy.
    Yes, the sky! I feel like it is way too underrated. While people are busy looking to the ends of the earth for beauty, you can simply look up and behold one of God's greatest works of art. The ocean is one of the top things on my list to see. I simply cannot WAIT. Mountains, too.
    BBC period dramas are the BEST. We just recently watched North and South (WHY had we not watched it sooner???) and I lowkey adore it. What are some of your favorites?
    I thought it was super duper weird in Skyward that algae was their main food! And then shortly after I read in my science that we actually do eat algae. XDD I think it's weirdly cool.

      Hahaha yes I have a friend who got the whole series for his birthday. He read the first chapter of Way of Kings… and hasn't touched it since. XD
      I finished Skyward! I thought it was fun. Reminded me a lot of Ender's Game?? But I liked the worldbuilding. But also why did so many people have to die?? ahhhh 😆
      I was so hyped to read the next book but then I read reviews on Amazon (for some reason??) and all my excitement took a nosedive because everyone said it was a disappointing book. And now I just am disappointed. Before reading the book. XD

      You should tell me what you think of it though!!
      Ah! Maybe you should go to a bookstore then. It's a dangerous thing, walking into a bookstore, but if you are strongwilled… maybe you can withstand the temptations of excessive book buying. 😉

      YES YES. North and South is one of my favorites!! (the book is good too if you like that era of literature 😀 )
      You need to watch Wives and Daughters next. The book and the BBC adaption are both ~a m a z i n g~

  12. Oh, dear. I actually started reading the Bonhoeffer biography last year too, and my goodness it’s intimidating! My sister said it’s really good though, so I’m hoping to get back into it sometime soon. *puts on a brave face*
    Also, that book, the book of beautiful things, I really want that to be a thing now. 😊❤

  16. I know this isn’t the same as classics covers, but I generally don’t like covers made in back in the old days, including classics too. Old covers look so unappealing. MG covers look okay, sometimes they look really cool, but YA books have the best covers in my opinion. I think Adult Fiction is between MG and YA with nice covers.
    Also, yess, I would love to read a post about your favourite books!!

      That’s a very interesting ranking. I’ve never thought of the cover’s of age-genres on a whole. Usually I have to think of case by case, because of course you can always find a horrid specimen and also a nearly-perfect one.

      1. Oh, just covers made in the 1900s and older. I said “old days” cause my sense of time is terrible and it was just safest to say that.
        Yeah, there are plenty of meh covers from YA books, I just found the most beautiful from YA which is why I am generalizing here. Case by case is a much wiser way to judge covers.
