Preptober Prompts Day 16

Happy Saturday to everyone!

Today’s prompt is What is a quirk or habit your character has developed but is unaware of?

Zeb has the habit of wondering about weather (aka squinting at the horizon) when talking to someone or suddenly noticing his shoes are untied (aka looking down). He also has developed the habit of coughing to fill silence or to give him a pause from speaking. That one started off intentional but is now a very strong habit he doesn’t think about much any more. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know how to sit up straight either. Then, over the course of the story, he develops the habit of checking the rear view mirrors a lot and always looking over his shoulder.

Charlie has the habit of bouncing her leg when sitting and rocking on the balls of her feet when nervous and always sitting on the edge of her seat (a new habit developed). As for a more random one, she also always looks into windows of stores when passing.

Sam has the habit of running his hand through his hair flexing his jaw when thinking and he’s the type of guy that would naturally be the one to start walking fast in a large group and end up in the front first to hail cabs, first to push the button under a light, and the first to step into the road to cross it.

Walter, one of my side characters, has the subconscious habit of looking at the person he’s passing on the road whenever he drives (which I personally find hilarious and I only just now realized ahaha).

  1. Does Leafman’s habit of believing the worst about everyone count? XD

I’m really bad at coming up with character quirks; I wish I were better at it. But… Sarabrina has a habit of looking up at the sky as the first thing she does if she goes out in the dark. Saria automatically analyzes her surroundings with an artist’s eye, considering how she would paint things without really thinking about it. Leafman does similarly with writing, whenever he takes a break from moping… although he’s probably aware of that one, given his embarrassment over being a writer.
And, as usual, I can’t figure out Elk. I don’t know what it is about his character that makes him so difficult to get in his head. ๐Ÿ˜›

Your characters’ habits are awesome! They really add a bit of realism. ^-^

    1. Wow that one is not one I was expecting but that is an interesting distinction. Is there a particular reason she answers like that?
Youโ€™ll have to let me know if you think of any other habits she has! ๐Ÿ˜„

  2. Smoke didn’t realise he has a habit to avoid sitting in chairs, especially when people offer it to him. He would sit anywhere (like a bed or floor) but a chair. And if he does sit in a chair, he sits straight and rigid. Also he is super organised and tidy, and doesn’t realise that because of that, he feels uncomfortable and stiff (but not panicked) in untidy spaces (yes, the battlefield is uncomfortable for him, but only when he stops fighting). And ever since he walk into a forest/jungle, he has a habit of just stopping and standing there, if he is able to at the time.
Blossom has a habit of biting her lip, especially when she’s nervous or thinking about something. She likes keeping in time or at least at the side of someone when she is walking with them. She doesn’t mind walking behind, but hates walking in front. She plays with her hair when she’s in a casual or relaxed mood. Also, she always stand in directly in front of someone when she talking about something serious.

    1. That’s a very interesting set of habits! It makes me wonder what happened to make him unconsciously develop those habits.
I love the last habit you mentioned for Blossom (though they are all great!)
      Again, fantastic answers. ๐Ÿ˜€
