Today the sky seems to be stolen from a 1950s film: Blurry gray. No blue.
Rainy days sometimes can be disheartening being stuck inside with little natural light and a yellow glare from your bedroom lamp, but there are always things to do none the less. And maybe it isn’t the fact that there aren’t things to do, but more the restlessness of a long afternoon.
Even when its sunny I have those days where I roam the house in search of something engaging to do.
I had been thinking about posting a list of activity ideas for such an afternoon since I absolutely love small random interesting tasks and the little things that brighten up the day, and then this happened.
Yep.
This is proof my friends. Great minds do think alike. π
Well here are (my) ten somewhat random – but interesting – things to do on a rainy day (or really any day because why not?)
- Warm up a marshmallow in the microwave. Note what happens. (**I am not accountable to whatever may happen when you do the aforementioned act**)
- Make coffee hot-chocolate (1. First put a scoop of hot chocolate mix in a mug. 2. Add coffee to fill half of the mug. 3. Stir that in until it is completely mixed, then fill the rest with hot water and stir again. Finally add a splash of cream or milk and if you like, froth it all and top off with mini marshmallows.)
- Use dry erase markers to draw on the window(s) in your room. Outline something you see outside. Do some school on it. Make a to-do list. Write a message and take a picture for a friend. Leave messages on your sibling’s windows.
- Send one of your favorite songs to a friend and tell them why you love it.
- Find a sunny quote and doodle it to hang in your room.
- If you have a bulletin board, use widowed earrings as thumbtacks.
- Pick one tree orΒ bush in your yard and look up what it is. (We have an Osage orange tree in our yard.)
- Make up a code alphabet for you and your siblings to use.
- Crank up music and sweep the house.
- And if it is just misting or a slow drizzle, simply open your window and enjoy the cool breeze and the smell of fresh rain and soil.
And I would have put sorting through closets and baking on my list but then it would look like I stole those ideas from Kenechi Duatron. Instead I’ll just say, go read her list too, because there are some really fun ideas there! (Like becoming Iron Man. π )
Whatever you do, if you warm up a marshmallow in the microwave, make sure to report back. I want to know how it goes and what you think. π
What do you like to do on a rainy day?
ta-ta for now my friends

I…I don’t like cleaning up food enough to try the marshmallow thing BUT I’m now super interested in the dry erase window idea…does that work?? Will it clean off fine??? CAN I REALLY DO THAT?? Bc now I really want to… And oh wow, osage orange trees are beautiful…I love desert stuff. π₯°

The marshmallow didnβt make a mess for me…. π
YEP
Dry erase comes off windows very easily! In fact the new models of dry erase boards are actually frosted glass! π
The Osage tree is beautiful! And the fruit is so fun to dissect. π

So for the marshmallow thing…I consider it one of my weaknesses. XD
I LOVE warm marshmallows and it is *highly* discouraged in our house to microwave them because it makes a mess. Guess who microwaves marshmallows when no one else is home?
The coffee-hot chocolate thing sounds like pure wonderfulness. *marks it next on to-do list*
Awwwww the dry erase thing is cute!!! I want to try that!
It’s been really rainy here today, so this morning I went to our local book/coffee shop (maybe my favorite place on the planet) and had a little (or maybe not so little) book haul and bought some super cute book postcards. It’s been a great day. π

When my siblings and I accidentally stumbled on the affects of a microwave on a marshmallow when trying to make something like sβmores, we were so startled and scared at the affect everything was dropped as we ran to immediately stop it. π
And then of course wanted to see it happen again…. π
But we never made too big of a mess, always stopping it in time. ππ
YES
It is delicious. My mom thought it up and Iβve been having to ever since…
Wow sounds like an amazing day. Now Iβm a little jealous. π

Also! Drawing on car windows with dry erase markers during road trips is a lot of fun.
Especially when youβre writing poetry in stop-and-go traffic.
The expressions of confusion and shock never get old. ππππ

I too love the smell of fresh rain…and that gentle pitter-patter sound, the touch of fluid movement, the sight of bouncy descending drops, and the pure taste of heavenly falling water. Definitely a water ballet right outside our windows.

I wish I could enjoy a day like that… I think I’d be murdered if I did that here at college, but…
Or you can listen to Owl City if you’re actually in that much need of sunshine. π
I loved this post…

Thatβs why you do it! No not to get murdered (π) but because every once and while – and actually quite often – college students need breaks. π
Oh yes totally. Owl Cityβs songs are like nothing else. β€οΈ

I have done like seven of those things before, but my favorite was the marshmallow! Years ago when making smores my Dad said ” I wonder how big we can get the marshmallow?” This led to a HUGE marshmallow, caramelization, and having to throw away a bowl, but it was so worth it for the sake of experimenting.

It’s been rainy at my house today, too. And I’m loving it! I get inspired by gloomy days. By the gray mists and the sound of drizzling rain, the dark clouds drifting by in the sky above. *sighs with happiness* I wish I lived on some misty Scottish coast. β€οΈ
Great list…you’re so creative! π€

Coffee hot chocolate???? That that is pure genius!! I must try this sometime! π β€ I love all these ideas, and I'm gonna try the window-marker thing, like, now. XD
I must admit, becoming Iron Man was a pretty great idea. :")

Yes. It was a great idea. ππ
Iβve always needed someone to give me permission to be my inner Iron Man. π

So all the trees in our backyard are the same thing … horrid evergreens. BUT love the rest of this, especially the marker idea.

My sister has a code alphabet and she taught it to me. I think that is a very cool thing to do. My sister even will write her sermon notes in her alphabet sometimes… Haha!

That is awesome! So did my older siblings, though we never took sermon notes with it haha! Just letters and the occasional school work. π
